Cobra Pilote The Ed Huges Story
Robert D. Walker
Cobra Pilote chronicles the life of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania sports car dealer and road racer James Edward (Ed) Hugus during the 1950s and 60s. Following the establishment of European Cars in 1952, Hugus prospered as a well respected businessman and helped to establish the Steel Cities Region (chapter) of the Sports Car Club of America. The book focuses on Hugus' role in bringing the initial Cobra sports car production to fruition. Through Hugus' financial backing and his completion facilities in Pittsburgh, the first of many production Cobras were completed and sold by him during those early days. Hugus was the first Cobra dealer and the East Coast Cobra Distributor. Because of that early Cobra production at European Cars, Carroll Shelby and the Ford Motor Company were finally able to sign the first Shelby-Ford contract, establishing Shelby American and beginning west coast Cobra production in Venice California.
Hugus is documented as having raced the first production Cobra (CSX 2001) at Connellsville Pennsylvania on August 26, 1962, weeks before Bill Krause's debut of the Shelby American Cobra, CSX 2002, at Riverside in October. Hugus was also the first American driver to pilot a Cobra at Le Mans in 1963 with his own car, CSX 2142. This is Hugus' story, illustrated with numerous and previously unseen photos and rare documents.
